Does wearing eyeglasses make your vision worse?
We all know people who wear glasses, go for an annual eye checkup, and come home with a new and stronger prescription. But the idea of glasses negatively affecting your vision is completely false. Certain eye problems, like myopia or distance vision, may worsen with age. During adolescence, prescriptions may need to be adjusted more frequently to coincide with the growth rate of the child. Wearing glasses, particularly ones with the correct prescription, improves vision and allows the person to see more accurately and with ease.
Is there any hope for older people to prevent vision loss?
While aging is a factor in certain eye-related problems, older people can take positive steps to prevent vision loss. Most people over the age of 40 will develop presbyopia, which is blurry near vision. A person may find they need to hold a book or newspaper at arm’s length to be able to focus on the words. This condition is a result of gradual thickening and loss of flexibility of the natural lens inside your eye. This condition is easily treated with corrective lenses.
While presbyopia is not vision loss, it can be a blessing in disguise. When people with this condition go for an eye exam, other problems, like cataracts or glaucoma, may be discovered and successfully treated. The good news is that there are many advanced treatments that can help an older person retain their vision.
Can eye exercises cause you to throw away your glasses?
Although the idea seems to make sense, the truth is that your eye shape determines your prescription and exercises will not significantly alter this basic anatomy. The best way to improve vision is to get an exam and a prescription for corrective lenses.
Does reading in dim light cause eye damage?
Your eyes may work harder in poor lighting, but there is no evidence that this situation will create permanent damage to your eyes. If you are reading in a dimly lighted area, you may notice your eyes becoming tired. This is eye strain which can be quite uncomfortable but isn’t damaging. Your pupils will automatically enlarge in order to capture the most light, but to read in this type of setting is straining them. Our eyes are designed to work most efficiently in proper lighting. Either turn up the wattage or leave the reading to another time to prevent eye strain.
Is an eye exam only necessary if you’re having problems?
This is a definite no. Having annual eyecare checkups should be part of your overall health plan. There are certain eye conditions and diseases that can be treated successfully if they are detected early. Also, you may not even realize that your vision is less than perfect until you have an exam. If you’re experiencing headaches, tired eyes, or maybe the print of the newspaper seems a little blurrier than usual, it’s a good idea to have your eyes checked. Having the proper corrective lens in a pair of glasses can improve your life and help you to see as you were meant to.
